Saturday, February 15 Old-Time Square Dance! Caller, Bill Martin Swedish American Hall, San Francisco 8 pm (7:30 pm lesson) - $12 advance / $14 door
Swing your partner at the social event of the festival! Join dancers both experienced and new for a raise-the-rafters old-time square dance that will leave you sweating, flushed, and ready for more. Last year's square dance was a sell-out, so get your tickets in advance. Foghorn Stringband (aka Foghorn Leghorn) is the dance band of choice in Portland's thriving urban old-time music scene, leading square dances at the Portland Old-Time Music Gathering and the KBOO Pickathon. The band features a stellar lineup of acoustic musicians: Sammy Lind on fiddle, Taylor Grover on banjo, Brian Bagdonas (The Dickel Brothers) on bass, mandowizard Caleb Klauder and guitar player Kevin Sandri (The Crooked Jades). Bring extra cash for a copy of their new CD, Rattlesnake Tidal Wave, so you can bring the music home with you. Bill Martin (also from Portland), calls an old-fashioned style of square dancing that draws largely from Southern rural folk traditions. Bill loves fast moving simple square dances done to raw and energetic music. His chanted calls join with the music in a way that pumps up the energy out on the dance floor. Bill loves to introduce the uninitiated to the fun of a square dance party, with the emphasis on "party"! Beginners should come early (at 7:30 pm) for a crash lesson in square dance fundamentals. Each dance will begin with a walk-through. Come with or without a partner. With sound engineering by Allen Lam. Address Buying Advance Tix Getting There Artist Link |
