Saturday, February 15 Darol Anger’s American Fiddle Ensemble Noe Valley Ministry, San Francisco 7:30 pm (doors at 7 pm) - $25
The fourth and final Noe Valley Music Series show in the Festival features a pairing of two internationally renowned (and locally based) artists in the world of bluegrass and acoustic music, Darol Anger and Laurie Lewis, each joined by an ensemble of stellar musicians that will make this a night to remember. To be honest, we weren’t sure quite what to expect from Darol Anger’s American Fiddle Ensemble when they appeared at last year’s SFBOT Festival—how many fiddles did they mean, exactly? The sold-out show turned out to be a fest highlight—one of the freshest and most interesting performances we’d heard in a long time. Anger’s genre-expanding approach (Turtle Island String Quartet, David Grisman Quintet, Psychograss, Anger-Marshall Duo) is matched by guitar master Scott Nygaard, cello phenomeon Rushad Eggleston, and fiddle’s newest prodigy, Brittany Haas. Their repertoire (with traditional music from Appalachia, Sweden, Brazil and Mali, plus original compositions by Anger and Nygaard) showcases the ensemble’s virtuosity, open-heartedness, and irresistible sense of fun. With increasing success as a singer and songwriter in a multiplicity of traditional acoustic settings, the Rounder Records release Laurie Lewis & Her Bluegrass Pals was a another dip by Lewis into the well of traditional bluegrass. Twice voted the IBMA’s Female Vocalist of the Year, Lewis was a key performer in a long roster of Bay Area bluegrass bands in the 1970s and 80s—Phantoms of the Opry, Arkansas Sheiks, the Good Ol’ Persons, Grant Street String Band, and Blue Rose. Tonight she’s joined by the Bluegrass Pals, in which Lewis and Tom Rozum (vocals, mandolin) are joined by Mary Gibbons (The All Girl Boys, The Avocado Brothers) on tenor vocals and rhythm guitar, with Todd Sickafoose on bass.
