Friday, February 14 Tom, Brad & Alice Noe Valley Ministry, San Francisco 7:30 pm - $15 advance / $17 door
First names were all that were required when this trio of veterans from the old-time music revival of the 1960s and '70s joined forces for a series of recordings, starting in 1999 (Been There Still, Holly Ding and We'll Die in the Pig Pen Fighting). Tom Sauber, a California native, has played old-time music for nearly forty years, in collaboration with Oklahoma fiddler Earl Collins, Round Peak banjo picker Eddie Lowe, and Dirk Powell and John Herrmann (as the band One-Eyed Dog). In 1980 he joined Ry Cooder on the soundtrack to the film The Long Riders. Brad Leftwich is widely considered one of the leading old-time fiddlers alive. He learned from musicians in his native Oklahoma and throughout the Ozark and Appalachian regions, most notably from the legendary Tommy Jarrell. In turn he has helped countless musicians learn to play old-time fiddle and banjo, through his teaching and his instructional videos and books. Alice Gerrard first came to prominence in the world of bluegrass, through her long partnership with Hazel Dickens (Hazel and Alice, Strange Creek Singers). She founded and continues to edit the Old-Time Herald, the leading publication for fans and players of old-time music. These old friends share a decades-long love of tradition that shines forth in the music they play. (Find out more about Alice Gerrard's Traditional Singing Styles Workshop.) At once hyper-traditional and post-punk contemporary, The Crooked Jades' unmistakeably distinctive sound--what they call old-time musical jollification--and its mix of obscure, old tunes and old- and obscure-sounding originals has placed the band at the forefront of modern stringbands. Hear these hometown favorites (Jeff Kazor, Lisa Berman, Tom Lucas, Stephanie Prausnitz, and Dave Bamberger) perform selections from their upcoming CD, The Unfortunate Rake, Volume 2.
