Thursday, February 13 Alhambra Valley Band The Atlas Cafe, San Francisco 7 pm - 10 pm - free!
The Alhambra Valley Band offers authentic and true-to-form bluegrass as well as award-winning original newgrass music. Formed in the late 1980s, the band has been featured at music festivals and other venues throughout California. A native San Franciscan, guitarist Lynn has won awards for her bluegrass compositions. Jill Cruey plays traditional, old-time and bluegrass fiddle. Mandolinist Dan Large brings his bluegrass, folk, rock and dawg style playing to the band. Andy Shaw plays ripping banjo tunes in the Scruggs and Crowe styles and teaches banjo in Benicia. Mary Shaw drives the band with the bass. The bill also features one of the all-too infrequent San Francisco appearances of The Avocado Brothers, one of the Bay Area's best kept bluegrass secrets. Steve Pottier (The Earl Brothers, The Circle R Boys) alternates with Mary Gibbons (Laurie Lewis and Her Bluegrass Pals) on guitar and bass; Ken Smith, mandolin, Marty Cutler, banjo; Kathy Barwick, resophonic guitar.
