Thursday, February 13 Reeltime Travelers Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco 9 pm (doors at 8:30 pm) - $10
With the release of their second CD, Livin' Reeltime, Thinkin' Old-Time, Reeltime Travelers have busted out onto a national stage. In 2002 they performed at Bill Monroe’s Bean Blossom Festival, at the IBMA World of Bluegrass, and with the touring Down From the Mountain bluegrass and old-time music extravaganza. Backeast the band can often be heard performing with old-time music legends Ralph Blizard, Ed Snodderly, and John Herrmann. They bring down the house with their high-energy mixes of traditional, fiddle-driven dance tunes, mountain harmonies, original banjo and fiddle tunes, and new songs with ties to the Old-Time tradition. All by itself this band would make tonight one of the can’t-miss events of the Festival, but they’ll be joined by two more acts that will get you up and dancing ’til the soles of your boots wear through. The Stairwell Sisters' unique mix of sweet country harmonies, rollicking dance tunes and red-hot buckdancing have made them the old-time stringband of choice for many local fans. Lisa Berman (dobro, guitar) and Stephanie Prausnitz (fiddle) of the Crooked Jades join Evie Ladin (banjo, buckdancing), Sue Sandlin (guitar, tiple) and Martha Hawthorne (bass) for a kicking quintet that makes for both good listening and good dancing. Look for the Stairwell Sisters' brand new (self-titled) CD! From here they head up to the Wintergrass Festival in Tacoma. Blink and he'll have a new band. First up is Jimbo Trout's Jug Thumpers, featuring Dave Murray, Ed Rudolph, Rachel Cry and Kyle Smith. Like the Von Trout Family Singers or Trout's Rustic Revelers before them, they play roll-up-the-rug old-time music with a pre-modern punk passion, forged in a neighborhood corner bar in the Outer Mission of San Francisco.
