Sweetwater Saloon, Mill Valley
8:30 pm - $15
Advance tickets now available. General admission. 21 and over.
Bluegrass legend Peter Rowan returns to the SFBOT
Festival for an intimate Bluegrass Gold show at Sweetwater in Mill Valley.
After a stint as lead singer and guitarist of Bill Monroe and the Blue
Grass Boys, he went on to help form the groundbreaking band Old & In The
Way with Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, and Vassar Clements. Old & In The
Way existed for just a handful of gigs in San Francisco in late 1973,
but the recordings made at these gigs turned the band into one of the
top-selling bluegrass acts of all time. The band reunited this past year
(minus Garcia, plus Herb Pedersen) for a CD called Old & In The Gray.
Rowan's other big release of the year was High Lonesome Cowboy,
a collaboration with premier cowboy singer Don Edwards, plus Tony Rice
and Norman Blake, that explored the common roots of bluegrass and western
music. That CD is currently nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional
Folk Album.
Rowan has recorded over 20 albums in musical styles ranging
from bluegrass and hippie rock to Tex-Mex, cowboy music and reggae. He
has penned such memorable songs as "The Free Mexican Air Force," "Panama
Red," "Midnight Moonlight," and (with Bill Monroe) "Walls of Time."He'll
be joined tonight by Avram Siegel (True Blue, The Kathy Kallick Band)
on banjo, Tom Bekeny (High Country, The Kathy Kallick Band) on mandolin,
Paul Shelasky on fiddle, and Paul Knight on bass.
Opening the show will be the delightful duo of Bill and
Tonee Norman, accompanied by Paul Shelasky on fiddle and Sue Shelasky
on bass.
Bluegrass Gold is a monthly showcase of traditional and
contemporary bluegrass at Sweetwater (typically on the third Tuesday of
the month), produced by Carltone Music. The next Bluegrass Gold (March
18) will feature Rounder Recording artists Open Road.
