Monday, February 10 The Ho'Down Quartet The Music Store, San Francisco 8 pm - $5
The Ho'Down Quartet is the product of four young musicians with the common aspiration of stretching the boundaries of the bluegrass genre. Banjo picker Jordan Klein (Belle Monroe & Her Brewglass Boys) met the guys at various jam sessions across the city. When he finally assembled them in his living room in the spring of 2002, Ho’Down Quartet was born. Lead vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Jim Chomas comes from a diverse musical background that includes both classical piano and the Grateful Dead. Mike Fox has traveled around the globe with his fiddle; he weaves his Celtic, Klezmer, and Latin influences seamlessly into the melodies. You might find bassist Ben Bernstein in a different club with a different band playing a different genre (including jazz, funk, blues, and rock) every night of the week, but he saves his hardest slapping for the Ho’Down. Tonight they share the bill with West of Kentucky, a hometown band making their second SFBOT Festival appearance. Deirdre Donovan (bass), Paul Ebersman (banjo), Andy Shaw (mandolin), and Alec Oyung (guitar) are joined by sixteen-year-old fiddle phenom Annie Staninec. The Music Store in West Portal hosts the American Roots Music Show on Sunday afternoons, featuring bluegrass, blues, cajun, klezmer, rockabilly and more.
