Sunday, February 9 The Bluegrass Intentions Golden Gate Lutheran Church, San Francisco 2 pm - $12 advance / $14 door ($10/$12 seniors, $6/$7 children 12 and under
While the Bluegrass Intentions have only just released their first CD, Old As Dirt, this quintet has been part of the Bay Area's roots music community for over 30 years. Eric Thompson (mandolin) and Suzy Thompson (fiddle) are veterans of the Blue Flame String Band (SF Bluegrass Festival 2000) and the California Cajun Orchestra. Their long-time musical partner Alan Senauke (guitar) celebrates the release of a solo CD elsewhere in the Festival. They’re joined here by Larry Cohea (High Country, Dark Hollow) on bass and vocals, and banjo wizard Bill Evans (of The David Grisman Bluegrass Experience and Due West)—leaning heavily on his traditional leg—as they combine bluegrass with old-time fiddling, blues, hillbilly, and country-western influences, interpreting this material in a way that is fresh yet totally consistent with the classic bluegrass sound. For almost as long as there’s been bluegrass in the Bay Area, there’s been High Country. Started by Butch Waller in 1968, and with seven albums to their credit, the band has earned its place as one of the West Coast's premier traditional bluegrass bands. Strongly influenced by the classic styles of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and the Stanley Brothers, High Country performs a vital mix of powerful originals and standards, from blues to breakdowns to gospels sung in close harmony. Band members are Butch Waller on mandolin, Bob Waller on guitar, Larry Cohea on banjo, Jim Mintun on dobro and guitar, Tom Bekeny on fiddle, and Glenn Dauphin on bass. High Country has toured extensively in the United States and Europe and was the first West Coast band ever to be invited to perform at Bill Monroe's Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival. This is High Country's fourth SFBOT Festival appearance. Address Buying Advance Tix Getting there Artist Links |
