Saturday, February 8 Jackstraw Noe Valley Ministry, San Francisco 7:30 pm (doors at 7) - $14 advance / $16 door
For the past two years we’ve welcomed Portland-based Jackstraw to the SFBOT Festival, and each time we’ve received fistfuls of surveys asking us to bring them back. We’re thrilled that we can showcase them as headliners of this evening of rising stars on the acoustic circuit. Despite an atypical instrumental mix (David Pugh on mandolin, Jon Neufeld and Darrin Craig on guitar, Jesse Withers on bass), Jackstraw’s sound springs from the traditional core of bluegrass. Their mix of old and original tunes, shaped through wicked harmonies and ferocious picking, continues to make converts to acoustic and bluegrass music at clubs throughout the Pacific Northwest. Santa Cruz-based StrungOver! is making bigger waves than ever, with the release of their second CD, Avocado Shakedown, featuring guest appearances by Laurie Lewis and Rob Ickes This past year they carried their traditionally-tinged, progressive bluegrass sound beyond the Bay Area, with sets at the High Sierra Music Fest, Mountainaire, and Hornings Hideout. They’ve just returned from a tour in Alaska, and are heading from here to Wintergrass in Tacoma. Twins Jason (banjo) and Jeremy (mandolin) Lampel are joined by Michael Thurman (guitar) and Hugh Broughton (bass). Local jam-fan favorites the Hot Buttered Rum Stringband defy easy categorization with their addition of accordion and woodwinds to their “high-altitude bluegrass” sound, shaped on a camping trip taken together in the Sierras. Their following has grown by leaps and bounds with the release of their debut album, Live at the Freight & Salvage. Address Buying Advance Tix Getting there Artist Links |
